A Swift Study

I've been doing a lot of whimsical cartoony drawings as of late, so I thought I'd try to get back into realistic for a change. I'm not really great at capturing likeness too well so I thought I'd do a portrait study. I figure if I do realistic drawings in between the whimsical it would help with capturing someones likeness when I try to turn them into a caricature.

I bought a new set of watercolors the other day so I thought I'd practice using watercolor instead of going to the ol' Photoshop for this study. I've been hearing Taylor Swift's new song a lot on the radio lately so I decided to draw her because of that. So here's my attempt at Taylor Swift.

Nice study Jeff! There's nothing like doing studies in watercolor. I hope all is well with you.

Hey Jeff. In regards to watercolor vs. gouache, I like to use them both at the same time. I love the look of transparency in watercolor, but sometimes you need some gouache opaqueness in your painting sometimes. What Iike to do is begin my painting with watercolors, while painting in layers, then when I feel that the painting needs a little punch, I will use gouache. You can get great capabilities using both, but it's really up to you in what you are interested in. Also, gouache can act like watercolor, when diluted with water.
The key to using these mediums, or all mediums for that matter, is to exhaust all capabilty. Learn how it works with different brushes, paper, mediums, etc. I hope this helps.
